Using Abraham’s unwavering faith to praise God and stand firm even when physical realities, medical reports, or natural circumstances explicitly contradict God’s promises.
Romans 4:19-21
“And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb:
He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”
Genesis 18:10-14
“And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son… Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?…
Is any thing too hard for the LORD?”
INTRODUCTION
There are moments in life when circumstances do not merely look difficult—they look completely dead. A doctor gives a final diagnosis, a business project suffers total collapse, a womb is deemed medically incapable of conception, or a long-standing situation reaches a point where natural recovery is physically impossible. In these moments, human logic shuts the door, drawing a definitive line that says, “This is over.”
In The Deception of the Natural Sight Line, we learned that natural vision zeroes in on deficits and treats physical realities as absolute boundaries. When facts scream “No,” our human instinct is to agree with the deadness. When the Lord announced that ninety-year-old Sarah would bear a son, her initial reaction in Genesis 18 was to laugh in disbelief because her body had long passed the age of childbearing. Her physical facts declared conception impossible.
However, Abraham chose a radically different posture. As recorded in Romans 4, Abraham looked directly at the physical facts—his own body as good as dead at a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb—and refused to let those facts dictate his faith. Building on Facts vs. Truth, physical evidence may present real facts, but God’s Word remains the ultimate Truth. Abraham looked past the natural deadness, gave glory to God in advance, and anchored his soul in the certainty that what God had promised, He was fully able to perform.
- Facing the Facts Without Fearing the Facts (Romans 4:19)
Notice that Abraham did not live in delusion or denial. Romans 4:19 states that he “considered not his own body now dead… neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb.”
Denial vs. Faith: Faith does not mean pretending a problem does not exist. Abraham was fully aware of his advanced age and Sarah’s physical limits. However, he refused to consider them as the final authority over his destiny.
Refusing Cognitive Dominance: To “consider” something means to give it weight, meditate on it, and allow it to guide your decisions. Abraham acknowledged the natural fact of deadness, but he gave weight only to the promise of God.
Overriding Medical and Physical Limits: Whether it is an old age, an adverse health report, or a dead financial door, physical facts are subject to divine override. Never let a natural “No” silence God’s eternal “Yes.”
- Refusing to Stagger (Romans 4:20)
The Scripture notes that Abraham “staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief.” To stagger means to hesitate, waver back and forth, or stumble under a heavy load.
The Instability of Double-Mindedness: When you look at God’s promise with one eye and the natural deadness with the other, you begin to stagger between faith and fear. This double-mindedness paralyzes spiritual momentum.
Strengthened by Faith: Instead of weakening under the weight of time and physical impossibility, Abraham’s faith grew stronger. True faith does not diminish as natural hope dries up; it locks deeper into God’s character.
The Weapon of Thanksgiving: Abraham gave glory to God before the physical baby arrived. Praising God in the face of deadness is the highest demonstration of faith—it tells the atmosphere that you believe the promise is already settled.
- Absolute Persuasion in God’s Capacity (Romans 4:21; Genesis 18:14)
The foundation of Abraham’s steadfastness was his unwavering conviction about God’s power: “being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”
The Ultimate Question: In Genesis 18:14, God answered Sarah’s skeptical laughter with a defining question: “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?” The answer to that question determines how you respond to every dead end in your life.
God Performs His Own Word: You are not responsible for performing the miracle; you are only responsible for believing the One who promised it. God assumes total obligation for fulfilling what comes out of His mouth.
Life Out of Resurrection Power: God is a specialist in bringing life out of dead places. When human capability hits zero, divine resurrection power takes over.
BIBLE CHARACTER EXAMPLE: LAZARUS IN THE TOMB (John 11:38-44)
A magnificent Biblical demonstration of defying physical deadness and choosing faith when the facts say “No” is the resurrection of Lazarus.
When Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been dead and buried in a tomb for four full days. By every medical, biological, and natural calculation, the situation was beyond hope. Decomposition had set in. When Jesus commanded, “Take ye away the stone,” Martha—Lazarus’ sister—immediately raised a practical, natural objection based on physical facts: “Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.”
Martha’s logic was accurate. The physical facts stated that organic breakdown was absolute and death was permanent. But Jesus corrected her sight line, saying, “Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?”
They moved the stone. Jesus lifted His eyes, gave thanks to the Father in advance, and cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” Instantly, resurrection power swept through the dark tomb, reversing biological decay, restoring vital organs, and bringing a dead man walking out wrapped in graveclothes. Jesus proved that even when decay and four days of death say “No,” His voice carries the absolute power to command life.
CONCLUSION
What “deadness” are you facing today? Is it a situation where every human calculation says it is too late, a medical report that declares recovery impossible, or a dream that seems to have decayed beyond repair?
Do not allow natural facts to rob you of divine possibilities. Follow the example of Abraham: face your reality without fearing it, refuse to stagger in unbelief, and begin to give glory to God right in the middle of the impossibility. Remind yourself of the question God posed to Sarah: “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?” Stand firm on His promises, fully persuaded that the God who brings life out of death is more than able to perform what He has spoken over your life.

What specific physical fact or “dead” situation in your life right now is tempting you to stagger in unbelief?
How can you practically shift your response from Martha’s reaction (“Lord, it stinketh”) to Abraham’s reaction (giving glory to God before seeing the result)?
What scripture or promise from God can you speak over your circumstances this week to keep your heart “fully persuaded”?
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, You are the God who quickens the dead and calls those things which be not as though they were.
There is nothing too hard for You.
Forgive me for the times I have allowed natural facts, medical reports, and physical deadness to limit my faith and fill my heart with doubt.
Today, I choose to stand on Your Word.
I acknowledge my challenges, but I elevate Your promises far above every natural circumstance.
I choose not to stagger through unbelief. I give You glory, praise, and thanks right now for the answers that are on the way.
Strengthen my heart, expand my vision, and let Your resurrection power bring life into every dead area of my life, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
