Focus:
To ground believers in unshakable inner peace by revealing the absolute unchangeability of God’s character, promises, and eternal decrees.
Hebrews 6:17-18 (NKJV)
“Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.”
Malachi 3:6 (NKJV)
“For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.”
Numbers 23:19 (NKJV)
“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”
Introduction
We live in a world defined by constant fluctuation. Currencies devalue, political alliances shift, health can deteriorate overnight, and human relationships can dissolve without warning. When our personal world is caught in such relentless change, looking for stability within human systems or our own emotional state is like trying to drop an anchor into a bucket of water.
True spiritual stability requires an anchor that hooks into something completely unmovable. Scripture reveals that the ultimate bedrock of the universe is the immutability—the absolute unchangeableness—of God’s nature and His decrees. God does not evolve, adapt to changing trends, or revise His commitments under pressure. When God issues a decree concerning His promises to you, it stands as an unalterable reality in the spiritual realm.
- The Meaning of Immutability
Immutability means God is incapable of undergoing any change in His essence, attributes, character, or divine purpose. Humans change their minds due to new information, weakness, fear, or lack of resources. God, possessing infinite knowledge, absolute power, and perfect integrity, never experiences a shift in perspective. As Malachi 3:6 declares, His immutability is the sole reason we are not consumed by our own inconsistencies. - The Two Immutable Things
In Hebrews 6:17-18, God takes extraordinary steps to reassure us. Knowing our human vulnerability to doubt, God bound His promise with an oath sworn by Himself. The “two immutable things” are His word and His oath. Since it is fundamentally impossible for God to lie, His word alone is absolute law; but by adding His oath, He provided double security so that we might experience “strong consolation”—an unyielding, bulletproof hope. - God Is Not a Man
Numbers 23:19 draws a sharp line of contrast between divine integrity and human unreliability. Men make promises they cannot keep, alter agreements when convenient, or abandon commitments when times get tough. God is fundamentally different. His decrees are backed by His entire character and sovereign throne. If He spoke a promise over your life, the execution of that promise is guaranteed by His holy nature.
Bible Character Example: Balaam’s Prophecy Over Israel
A compelling demonstration of God’s immutable counsel is found in Numbers 22–24 during the confrontation between Balak, the king of Moab, and Israel. Fearing the vast numbers of Israel, Balak hired Balaam, a famous sorcerer, to put a spiritual curse on the nation so Moab could defeat them in battle. Balak offered immense wealth, honor, and political favor if Balaam would alter Israel’s spiritual standing.
Balaam tried repeatedly to pronounce a curse over Israel from different locations and altars. Yet, every time he opened his mouth, the Holy Spirit took control of his tongue, forcing him to declare blessings instead of curses.
Frustrated, Balak demanded to know why Balaam could not fulfill the contract. Balaam responded with the immutable truth recorded in Numbers 23:19-20: “God is not a man, that He should lie… Behold, I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it.” No amount of money, pagan sacrifices, or royal demands could force God to alter His covenant promise to Israel. God had decreed a blessing over His people, and that decree stood completely unshakeable against all spiritual warfare and political conspiracy.
Conclusion
Your feelings will change, human circumstances will fluctuate, and people may fail you, but the word of God stands forever. When you anchor your heart in His immutable counsel, you step out of the storm of anxiety and into the fortress of divine certainty. God has spoken concerning your redemption, protection, and destiny—and what He has decreed, no power in heaven or earth can ever reverse.
Reflection Questions
- In what practical ways do you tend to act as though God is like a man—fearing He will change His mind or break His promises to you?
- How does the truth that God confirmed His promise with an oath (Hebrews 6:17-18) give you confidence during prolonged waiting seasons?
- Looking at Balaam’s failed attempts to curse Israel, how does knowing God’s blessing over your life is irreversible impact your fear of enemy attacks or human opposition?
