Fear is a rapid, involuntary reflex of our fallen human nature. But while you cannot always control the first wave of negative information that enters your ears, you have total, sovereign control over what happens next. God has given every believer the structural authority to intercept a bad report before it settles into the heart as a paralyzing fear. The opening words of the text are highly strategic: “As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken…”
There was zero delay, zero hesitation, and no passive waiting. Jesus did not allow the negative words to linger in the atmosphere or take root in Jairus’ mind.
When bad news arrives, you enter a highly critical spiritual window. If you spend hours meditating on the negative report, re-reading the bad news, and calling people to complain, you allow fear to establish a legal stronghold in your soul. You must learn to intercept the bad news immediately with the truth of God’s Word.

Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue, had just received the absolute worst report a father could ever hear: “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” (Mark 5:35). Human logic said the story was over, hope was gone, and panic was the only appropriate response.
Yet, Jesus completely ignored the finality of the human report.
When Jesus commands, “Do not be afraid,” He is asserting that His sovereign authority overrides every natural fact. A medical diagnosis, a bank statement, or a corporate termination may be a factual reality, but it is never the final authority when Jesus is on the scene.

Bible Character Example: King Jehoshaphat’s Instant Shift
A spectacular national demonstration of shifting instantly from fear to faith is recorded in the life of King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20:1-12. Jehoshaphat received a terrifying intelligence report: a massive, overwhelming coalition army from Moab, Ammon, and Mount Seir had invaded the land and was rapidly marching toward Jerusalem.
The Bible notes the natural human reaction in verse 3: “And Jehoshaphat feared…” He felt the sudden, crushing reflex of panic.
However, watch his immediate shift. The scripture notes that he instantly “…set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.” He did not sit on his throne weeping, nor did he frantically try to negotiate a surrender. He gathered the entire nation, stood in the house of the Lord, and prayed a magnificent prayer anchored entirely in God’s sovereignty.
He closed his prayer with words of absolute surrender and faith in 2 Chronicles 20:12: “…For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.” Because he shifted instantly from fear to faith, God gave him absolute peace, sent a prophetic word of reassurance, and caused the enemy armies to destroy one another without Judah throwing a single spear.
