Introduction
Many people view peace as an emotional byproduct of a good day—something that depends on whether things go smoothly, people behave, or bills get paid. When we look at peace this way, it feels like an elusive luxury that we can only hope to stumble into occasionally.
But in the economy of God, peace is not treated as an accidental emotion or a stroke of good luck. It is a legal, binding reality.
God has woven peace directly into His relationship with His people through a divine commitment. When you belong to the Sovereign Lord, peace is your inheritance. It is a deliberate, contractual blessing that God has bound Himself to pronounce and perform over your life, regardless of what is happening in the world around you.
Focus
The primary focus of this teaching is to explore peace not as an emotional luxury, but as a deliberate covenant blessing pronounced by God over His people. We will understand that divine peace belongs to us by right of our relationship with God, and we can boldly claim it when circumstances look chaotic.
Numbers 6:24-26 (NKJV)
“The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”
1. The Source and Authority of the Blessing
This text, widely known as the Priestly or Aaronic Blessing, was not a casual wish composed by Moses or Aaron. God Himself commanded them exactly what words to say over the children of Israel.
- By structuring this blessing, God was establishing a formal framework for how He relates to His covenant people.
- Notice that every single line begins with “The Lord.” This emphasizes that your peace does not originate from human efforts, political stability, or favorable luck. It is actively generated and sustained by the sovereign authority of God.
2. The Progression Toward Peace
The blessing moves through a beautiful, deliberate sequence that culminates in a single destination:
- “Bless you and keep you”: God promises to prosper and aggressively guard you.
- “Make His face shine… be gracious”: God promises His divine favor, turning His smiling approval toward you.
- “Lift up His countenance upon you”: This is an intimate picture of a father looking directly into the eyes of his child with full attention and delight.
- “And give you peace”: The ultimate end of experiencing God’s protection, grace, and undivided attention is the unshakeable gift of Shalom. Peace is the crown of the covenant.
3. Peace as a Covenant Security
Because this peace is a covenant gift, it is structurally secure. A covenant is a legally binding agreement backed by the character and throne of the one who makes it.
- God’s covenant of peace does not fluctuate based on the stock market, societal instability, or personal mistakes.
- In Isaiah 54:10, God declares: “For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed.” Even if the earth itself shakes, God’s contractual commitment to keep your soul in perfect tranquility remains completely intact.
Bible Character Example: Phinehas and the Security of the Covenant
A powerful historical demonstration of God establishing a literal “covenant of peace” is found in the life of Phinehas in Numbers 25:10-13. The nation of Israel had fallen into deep rebellion, immorality, and idolatry, which triggered a deadly plague across the camp. In the midst of this terrifying crisis, when thousands were dying and panic was everywhere, Phinehas stood up. Moved by holy zeal for God’s honor, he executed swift justice to stop the rebellion.
Immediately, the plague was halted, and God spoke to Moses concerning him: “Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace” (Numbers 25:12).
Think about the environment: bodies were being buried, the camp was recovering from a massive national trauma, and the future felt completely uncertain. Yet, right there in the middle of the mess, God anchored Phinehas and his descendants with a legal guarantee of divine protection and security. Phinehas didn’t have to live in fear of retaliation or future plagues; he walked away with a sovereignly backed insurance policy of total Shalom.
Conclusion
You do not have to beg or plead for peace as though God is holding it back from you. If you are a child of God, peace is your covenant right. The Sovereign Ruler of the universe has already turned His face toward you, smiled upon you with grace, and commanded His peace to rest upon your life. When anxiety tries to knock on the door of your heart, remind yourself of the Aaronic blessing: your peace is signed, sealed, and delivered by the blood of an everlasting covenant.
