Introduction
Many people approach faith seeking a Savior to rescue them from discomfort, yet few seek a Sovereign to rule over their daily choices. Superficial faith treats God as a means to an end—a tool to secure personal prosperity, physical protection, or worldly ambition. However, true biblical faith demands an absolute exchange of loyalties. When Jesus Christ transitions from being a helpful addition in your life to your absolute central treasure, the idols of self-preservation and self-exaltation inevitably collapse. Dethroning the self is not merely a spiritual exercise; it tangibly reshapes how we spend our time, steward our resources, and invest our energy toward God’s kingdom and His people.
“Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?'”

The Shift from Exploitation to Exaltation
Superficial faith keeps self firmly seated on the throne of the heart. It views God as a divine assistant whose primary role is to grant personal success, peace, and earthly safety. True faith reverses this dynamic entirely: God is no longer used to serve self; self is surrendered to serve God.
The Dissolution of Self-Preservation and Pride
When Christ becomes your ultimate treasure, the compulsive need to protect your status, build your personal empire, or elevate your reputation vanishes. You no longer fear losing earthly advantages because your joy and security are anchored in an unshakeable Savior.
Tangible Restructuring of Life
Spiritual transformation is never purely internal—it reflects directly in practical priorities. True faith reshapes your calendar (how you spend your time), your finances (how you steward your wealth), and your energy (where you direct your strength). The kingdom of God, the health of the local church, and the spiritual restoration of others take precedence over personal ambition.
Biblical Example: The Apostle Paul
Before encountering Christ, Saul of Tarsus was defined by self-exaltation and religious ambition. He sought status, authority, and approval among his peers. Yet, when he encountered the resurrected Lord on the road to Damascus, his entire internal hierarchy was dismantled.
Paul moved from using religion for self-aggrandizement to abandoning every personal privilege for the glory of God. In his letter to the Philippians, he wrote:
“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.”

Paul’s schedule, safety, finances, and energy were entirely reordered. He spent the remainder of his life enduring imprisonment, hardship, and fatigue, not out of self-preservation, but out of a deep desire to build Christ’s church and serve the spiritual well-being of others.
Conclusion
A faith that leaves self on the throne is no faith at all; it is simply self-worship disguised as piety. Real conversion occurs when Jesus Christ becomes your highest prize, rendering earthly comfort secondary and kingdom purpose primary. As you yield control of your life to Him, your daily priorities will naturally reflect His heart for the church and the world around you.

Prayer
Lord God, forgive me for the times I have placed myself on the throne of my heart and treated You merely as a tool for my own comfort and ambition.
I ask today that You open my eyes to the supreme worth of Jesus Christ.
May He become my central treasure, taking precedence over every desire for self-preservation or praise.
Reshape my calendars, my finances, and my energy so that my life align entirely with Your kingdom and the building up of Your church.
